Root Prayer (Delta Blues)

Root Prayer

Down by the cypress root,
where the river turns to night,
I laid my worries softly
in the fading amber light.
The bullfrogs sang their chorus,
the wind hummed through the reeds—
and every step I’d taken
felt like footprints in my deeds.

Oh, cypress root prayer,
carry my troubles slow.
Let the river wash the sorrow
from the places I can’t go.
Brother, keep on steady,
’cause the blues don’t ever spare—
but a man can find forgiveness
in a cypress root prayer.

Met a preacher on the levee,
coat torn at the seams.
Said he once was a rich man
’til he gambled off his dreams.
But he sang a song of mercy,
deep as delta mud can be—
and the truth inside his tremble
brought a quiet peace to me.

Lead: Oh Lord, I’m sinking slowly.
Response: River lift you when you fall.
Lead: Got a heart that’s bruised and heavy—
Response: Lay it down, surrender all.

Oh, cypress root prayer,
carry my troubles slow.
Let the river wash the sorrow
from the places I can’t go.
Brother, keep on steady,
’cause the blues don’t ever spare—
but a man can find forgiveness
in a cypress root prayer.

When the moon climbs up the branches
and the world is still and bare—
I hear the river whisper
like a cypress root prayer.
