Everything Is Moving
Radio talking, midnight calling,
neon flickers on the wall.
Headlines running, engines humming,
everybody knows it all.
Morning paper, elevator,
coffee cooling in my hand,
satellites and commentators
drawing circles in the sand.
Market crashing, cameras flashing,
someone says the sky turned red,
traffic crawling, prophets calling,
half the city stays in bed.
Names and numbers, summer thunder,
voices racing down the wire,
every answer breeds a question,
every spark becomes a fire.
Turn it up, turn it down,
every signal shakes the town.
Everybody wants to know
where exactly we should go.
Everything is moving,
everything is moving fast.
Yesterday is disappearing,
tomorrow never seems to last.
Everything is changing,
but I’m standing in the light.
If the whole world loses balance,
I’m still feeling all right.
Breaking stories, faded glories,
politicians change their shoes,
televisions sell conclusions,
every channel brings more news.
Streetlight blinking, people thinking,
someone paints across the train,
“Nothing lasts and nothing matters,”
then the morning comes again.
Phones are ringing, children singing,
someone dances in the rain,
while the experts count disasters
and explain them all again.
Speed it up, slow it down,
another rumor hits the town.
Everybody has a plan,
nobody knows where it began.
Everything is moving,
everything is moving fast.
Yesterday is disappearing,
tomorrow never seems to last.
Everything is changing,
but I’m standing in the light.
If the whole world loses balance,
I’m still feeling all right.
Red light, green light, satellite night,
wrong turn, right turn, hold on tight.
Big screen, small dream, headline parade,
new world, old world, plans getting made.
Fast lane, slow train, thunder again,
somebody shouting my name in the rain.
One step, two step, out of the frame,
everything changes and nothing’s the same.
And maybe that’s the point.
Clocks are spinning, nobody’s winning,
but the band begins to play.
Windows open, words unspoken,
night is turning into day.
No prediction, no permission,
no instruction manual here.
Just the rhythm of the moment
getting louder in my ear.
Everything is moving,
everything is moving fast.
Let the old world keep on falling,
we don’t have to hold the past.
Everything is changing,
and the morning feels all right.
If the whole world loses balance,
we can dance into the light.
Everything is moving,
everything is moving on.
By the time they name the ending,
we’ll already be gone.
Radio talking, daylight walking,
coffee warming in my hand.
Everything is moving.
And I think I understand.
