The River Keeps My Name
The river keeps my name
beneath the willow tree,
where every stone remembers
what the years took out of me.
I left before the morning,
before the birds could rise,
with dust upon my fingers
and winter in my eyes.
The road was pale and empty,
the fields were turning grey,
I heard the church bells calling
but I had gone away.
No letter in my pocket,
no promise left to keep,
only one old memory
I carried through my sleep.
Oh, the river keeps my name,
though the water runs away.
It knows the words I buried,
it remembers what I prayed.
And if you walk beside it
when the moon is hanging low,
you may hear my old song drifting
where the dark waters flow.
There was a house behind me
with ivy on the wall,
a candle in the window
and shadows in the hall.
Someone once stood waiting,
someone called me home,
but some hearts learn too early
how to wander on their own.
I followed every silence,
I followed every flame,
until the road forgot me
and the river learned my name.
Oh, the river keeps my name,
though the water runs away.
It knows the words I buried,
it remembers what I prayed.
And if you walk beside it
when the moon is hanging low,
you may hear my old song drifting
where the dark waters flow.
Don’t build a stone above me.
Don’t carve a date or line.
Leave me to the willow,
leave me to the pines.
The earth will take my footsteps,
the rain will take my face,
but every moving river
leaves something in its place.
Oh, the river keeps my name,
when every voice is gone.
It carries what was broken,
it carries what lives on.
And if the night grows quiet
and you hear the water slow,
that’s only my old song returning
where the dark waters flow.
Where the dark waters flow…
where the dark waters flow…
The river keeps my name.
